EC approves Modifications to Specifications of Novel Food Protein Extract from Pig Kidneys

May 12, 2023

Bioiberica, a company involved in the production of novel food ingredients, submitted an application to the European Commission to amend the specifications of their protein extract from pig kidneys. The proposed changes involve implementing a new production process using acetone wash steps, heat-drying, milling, and sieving to obtain a pale brown powder form of the novel food. Additionally, Bioiberica requested the use of Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography linked with Fluorescent Detection (UHPLC-FLD) as an alternative method for measuring the enzymatic activity of Diamine Oxidase (DAO) in the protein extract. The European Commission has carefully reviewed the requested modifications and concluded that they are unlikely to have any adverse effects on human health.

Based on the information presented in the application, the European Commission finds sufficient grounds to approve the proposed modifications to the specifications of the novel food protein extract from pig kidneys.
