Food Supplement Registration in UAE

Food Supplement Registration in UAE

Food Supplement Registration in UAE - Overview

The prime focus of a national Health Authority (HA) is consumer safety.  All food and food supplements that are introduced or imported to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) should be compliant with the food regulations. The Food Safety Department of the Dubai Municipality (DM) and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) aim at guaranteeing and enforcing proper food control procedures. To enable food product registration or food supplement registration in the UAE, the manufacturer should file the product under the DM food registration system, and before any food item can be imported to Dubai, the food item and its label must be registered in the Food Import Re-Export System (FIRS) of the DM, as per Local Order No. 11/2003.

Food Product Registration in Dubai Municipality is a vital process for any food product that is intended to be imported, distributed, or sold within the country. Product registration applications of food supplements with higher claims and critical ingredients must be submitted to the MOHAP with proper and prior product classification from the relevant authority.

The UAE food labeling regulation requires mandatory labeling information on all food packages, such as brand name, date of manufacture, expiry date, net weight, lot number, halal marking, etc. Primary documents include a valid licence issued to the establishment or the individual by a competent authority in the UAE with license activity related to health supplements, a free sale certificate, a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certificate, clear product label with high resolution, scientific claim reports, etc.

Additionally, there are Gulf Standardization Organization (GSO) Technical Regulations that are referred to and applied within the UAE, e.g., GSO 2233 Requirements of Nutritional Labeling, GSO CAC GL 1 General Guidelines for Misleading Food Claims, GSO 2142 Technical Regulations for Novel Foods — Genetically Modified Processed Food and Feed, GSO 654 Foods for Special Dietary Use, Food Used for Special Medical Purposes, Halal Requirements, and many more.
