New Zealand issues import health standard for fresh lychee from Chinese Taipei

January 19, 2023

New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is currently reviewing phytosanitary measures on the fresh lychee pathway from Chinese Taipei to New Zealand. Bactrocera dorsalis was discovered in 2021 on vapour heat treated fresh lychee from Chinese Taipei. This led to the suspension of Chinese Taipei's vapour heat treatment pathway for lychee. To manage the risk of fruit flies on fresh lychee imported from Chinese Taipei, the ministry has proposed to remove the vapour heat treatment schedule from the standard and replacing it with a combination of vapour heat treatment followed by cold treatment.
