The legalization of cellobiose as a novel food and updating Implementing Regulation 2017/2470 (applicable in the EEA) through Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/943

Based on the evidence presented, the EU Authority has determined that the proposed use of cellobiose is safe. This scientific opinion provides sufficient grounds to establish that cellobiose satisfies the conditions for its placing on the market in accordance with Article 12(1) of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 when used in a variety of foods aimed at the general population, including food supplements as defined in Directive 2002/46/EC aimed at the general population, excluding infants and young children.

For a period of five years beginning on June 1, 2023, only SAVANNA Ingredients GmbH is permitted to market the novel food referred to in Article 1 within the Union, unless a subsequent applicant obtains an authorization for that novel food without reference to the scientific data protected pursuant to Article 3, or with the agreement of SAVANNA Ingredients GmbH.
