Safety Assessment of Commercial Plastics' PET Recycling Process for Food Contact Materials Using Starlinger iV+ Technology

March 27, 2023

The safety of the recycling process Commercial Plastics (EU register number RECYC274), which employs the Starlinger iV+ technology, was evaluated by the EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP). Article:

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) flakes that have been hot caustic washed and dried are the primary input for this process. These flakes are primarily sourced from post-consumer PET containers, with a maximum of 5% PET originating from non-food consumer applications. In the production process, the dried flakes undergo crystallization in a primary reactor before being transformed into pellets through extrusion.

A recent study has shown that the recycling process in question can effectively prevent the migration of unknown contaminants into food, ensuring that it remains below the modeled migration level of 0.1 μg/kg food. The safety of recycled PET for use in materials and articles that come in contact with food, including drinking water, was evaluated by a panel. The conclusion was that the recycled PET is safe for use at up to 100% for long-term storage at room temperature, with or without hotfill. However, it should not be used in microwave or conventional ovens.
