EU Proposes Updates to Plastic Food Contact Material Regulations Based on Scientific Advances

January 24, 2023

The proposal intends to ensure that the rule accounts for current scientific and technological advancement and eliminate any uncertainty regarding its proper application which is based on recent scientific opinions from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on both currently allowed compounds and novel substances that may be used in food contact materials.

The EU has suggested new regulations for a class of chemicals known as "phthalates."

Subject to specified usage constraints and migration limits, these chemicals are now approved as additives for use as plasticizers and technical support agents in plastic FCM. The suggested adjustments are supported by opinions from the EFSA and ECHA.

A number of amendments to Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011's Annex I have been proposed by the EU, including the reevaluation of 284 substances, the revocation of salicylic acid, transitional measures for products already on the market, provisions for the continued use of specific substances and materials, and the submission and consideration of applications for the authorization of such substances and materials.
