EU has refused to approve lemon essential oil (Citrus limon essential oil) as a basic substance

EU has refused to approve the use of lemon essential oil (Citrus limon essential oil) as a basic substance in plant protection as an acaricide, insecticide and fungicide on citrus fruit trees.|It concluded that:|1. The main hazard associated with lemon essential oil is its toxicity by inhalation and skin sensitisation properties.|2. The main component of lemon essential oil, d-limonene, is classified as a substance that may be fatal if swallowed and when it enters airways, as a skin irritant and as a substance that may cause an allergic skin reaction.|3. It is also toxic to aquatic organisms.|4. Lemon essential oil does not fulfill the approval criteria for basic substances therefore it is not approved.
