Egg Products Import Conditions Under Review: Animal Biosecurity Advice 2023-A05

May 3, 2023

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in Australia has conducted a comprehensive policy review of the country's import conditions for whole egg, egg yolk, and egg white powder. As part of this review, the department collaborated with CSIRO to produce a report focusing on biosecurity hazards related to the import of egg powders, specifically avian influenza viruses and Newcastle disease virus. The report analyzed scientific literature, industry practices, and expert advice to assess the risk factors and mitigation strategies for these viruses in egg powders. Following the report, the department internally reviewed the heat treatment requirements for imported egg powders and proposed revised heat treatment options aligned with standard industry practices.

The Draft review report is open for stakeholders comments until July 2, 2023.
