May 22, 2023

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has officially enacted the Public Health (Alcohol) (Labelling) Regulations 2023 and the remaining provisions of Section 12 of the Public Health (Alcohol) Act, solidifying their legal status.

Under the new law, alcohol product labels will be required to display key details such as calorie content and alcohol grams. Additionally, they will include prominent warnings about the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, as well as the risks of liver disease and fatal cancers associated with excessive drinking. To access further information, consumers will be directed to the HSE website, www.askaboutalcohol.ie, through the labels.

The regulations will officially take effect on May 22, 2026, bolstering efforts to promote public health and enhance consumer awareness regarding the potential risks of alcohol consumption.
