EFSA Safety evaluation of the food enzyme phospholipase A2 from porcine pancreas

April 18, 2023

Sanyo Fine Co., Ltd. obtains the food enzyme phospholipase A2 (phosphatidylcholine 2'-acylhydrolase, EC 3.1.1.4) from the pancreas of pig animals. Egg processing, flavoring production, and yeast processing are the three food manufacturing operations that are designed to make use of this product.

The Panel was unable to evaluate the food enzyme's level of risk due to a lack of sufficient data provided by the applicant regarding the origin of the food enzyme, its production, and its chemical characteristics, as well as a lack of information regarding the food manufacturing processes to which the food enzyme is applied.

As a result, the Panel was unable to determine whether or not the food enzyme was safe to consume.
