EFSA re‐evaluation of the risks to public health related to the presence of bisphenol A (BPA) in foodstuffs

April 19, 2023

To determine an tolerable daily intake (TDI) for BPA in food, the European Commission asked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The CEP Panel determined that there is Low to Very Low Probability that BPA poses a genotoxic danger. The most important effect was found to be on mouse Th17 cells, and a daily dose of 8.2 ng/kg bw was established as the reference point.

The lowest estimated Benchmark Dose (BMD) was found to be below the RP based on Th17 cells with a likelihood of 57-73% based on uncertainty analysis. The CEP Panel found that ingesting BPA poses a health risk.
