EFSA published safety evaluation of the Steinbeis PolyVert method for recycling post-consumer PET into food contact materials, based on EREMA Basic technology

March 8, 2023

The safety of Steinbeis PolyVert's recycling method, which employs the EREMA Basic technology and has the EU register number RECYC270, was evaluated by the EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, and Processing Aids (CEP). ||

PET flakes from collected post-consumer PET containers, including no more than 5% PET from non-food consumption uses, are the input material. They are hot caustic washed and dried. The effectiveness of the process' decontamination depends heavily on the reactor of step 2, for which a challenge test was offered. ||

It was shown that this recycling method can guarantee a level of migration of potential unknown contaminants into food that is below the migration that is conservatively modelled to occur between 0.1 and 0.15 g/kg food. The assessment does not apply to uses of recycled PET products that are not designed for use in conventional or microwave ovens.
