The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) presented the formal petition to the FDA, which was endorsed by a number of organisations, including CR.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that Red Dye No. 3 causes cancer in animals and thus banned its use in cosmetics. Additionally, research at the time connected Red Dye No. 3 to hyperactivity in youngsters.
The FDA had evidence that Red Dye No. 3 caused cancer in experimental animals ingesting food, medications, or dietary supplements. After being prohibited from cosmetics, many believed that Red Dry No. 3 would soon be banned from food and drink. In this instance, however, the FDA has acted at a glacial pace.
