FDA seeking comments on Compliance Policy Guide Sec. 555.250 Major Food Allergen Labeling and Cross-Contact

May 16, 2023

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a draft Compliance Policy Guide titled "Sec 555.250: Major Food Allergen Labeling and Cross-contact," which replaces existing enforcement policy on major food allergen labeling and cross-contact. FDA encourages stakeholders to submit comments by July 17, 2023, and is part of the 2005 Compliance Policy Guides Manual. To prevent allergen cross-contact, manufacturers should implement practices like dedicated equipment, separation, production scheduling, sanitation, and proper rework usage. The FDA is exploring the declaration of allergenic ingredients in spices, flavorings, or colors, including food ingredients like peanuts, soybeans, milk, eggs, fish, Crustacea, Tree nuts and wheat.
