NCA issued a statement on the findings of a consumer report in the US that claims to have dangerous amount of heavy metals in Chocolates

December 17, 2022

In 2018, the National Confectioners Association and As You Sow, a nonprofit that supports the enforcement of Proposition 65, achieved a settlement. The association represents chocolate producers like Hershey's, Lindt, and Godiva. The settlement established lead and cadmium content standards that, if exceeded, call for warning labels. The experts have selected and ranked a list of suggested cadmium and lead reduction initiatives for the sector to take into consideration implementing based on their findings. Within the first year of putting new handling methods in place, significant lead reductions could be expected. Beyond the levels reduced by blending, reducing cadmium will require longer-term farming techniques, such as soil remediation and the planting of new tree stock. Industry participants intend to keep up their collaboration with As You Sow, cocoa growers, researchers, and their own quality teams in order to significantly reduce the amount of cadmium and lead in chocolate products.
