Zhenjiang Ceville's recycling method for post-consumer PET into food contact materials has been given an EFSA safety evaluation based on EREMA Basic technology

March 8, 2023

The safety of Zhenjiang Ceville's recycling method, which employs the EREMA Basic technology and has the EU register number RECYC269, was evaluated by the EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, and Processing Aids (CEP). ||

Hot PET flakes from collected post-consumer PET containers are used as the input material, with no more than 5% of the PET coming from non-food consumer uses. The ability of this recycling process to guarantee a level of migration of possible unknown contaminants into food below the conservatively modelled migration of 0.1 8 g/kg food has been shown. ||

When used up to 100% in the production of materials and items for contact with all kinds of foodstuffs, including drinking water, for long-term storage at room temperature, with or without hotfill, recycled PET derived from this method is not thought to pose a safety risk.

The assessment does not apply to uses of recycled PET products that are not designed for use in conventional and microwave ovens.
