FSANZ Releases Statement Regarding Application for Genetically Modified Banana

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has initiated the evaluation of an application from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) for the approval of a disease-resistant genetically modified (GM) banana. The GM banana line, called QCAV-4, is the first whole GM fruit to be submitted to FSANZ for assessment and potential approval. The assessment process for Application A1274 - Food derived from disease-resistant banana line QCAV-4 will involve comprehensive evaluations, including molecular, chemical, compositional, and nutritional assessments. The safety of the GM food will be assessed based on scientific evidence.

The assessment is estimated to take approximately nine months and will include a round of public consultation at a later date.
